First Grade News

No memory or spelling words next week.

Reminder; no school next Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

We will not be sending home a class note or the Friday folder next week.

Please continue to work on the sight words, math flashcards, counting change and telling time to the hour. Add oral reading to the mix and your child will have a lifetime of success!

In today’s Friday folder I sent home the entire Dolch sight word list number 1. By the end of first grade your child should quickly, recognize these words and be able to spell at least 85% of them. Your child is tested orally on these words two times per month.

On Thursday, December 3rd, we will continue our Social Studies unit on the 50 states by learning about California, Colorado, Connecticut, and Delaware. If you have any postcards or other special items from those states, your child may bring them to share on that Thursday. These items will be taken care of and returned to you.

We are very blessed to have you and your child (children) as part of the Zion Family. Thank you for your continued support, and help. Have a happy, blessed Thanksgiving.

In his service,
Miss Schulteis and Mrs. Jaynes

Memory for next week; Call upon me in the day of trouble, I will deliver you and you will honor me. Psalm 50:15

Spelling words for next week; get, ten, red, let, men, yes.

Huge thanks to all of you for you r help on the field trip to Miller Farm. We were blessed with great weather and yummy vegetables!

On October 19th our classroom will be blessed with Miss Schulteis, a student teacher from Concordia University, Seward Nebraska. She has completed eight weeks of classroom instruction in Nebraska and will be here to gain more experience. Miss Schulteis will graduate from Concordia University in May. Please welcome her to our Zion school family.

Early release (11:30) on Friday October 23rd.

No school on Friday October 30th.

Parent/teacher conferences are coming up; please watch for further details in the next week or so.

Please DO NOT send your child to school if he/she has a fever.

The first graders will be singing in church on November 8th. Please mark your calendar now!!!!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do your math flashcards! We are currently working on simple addition, counting pennies and nickels, story problems and this week we added simple subtraction.

All of the students were tested this week on the first list of the sight words (it is becoming apparent who has reviewed them at home and who hasn’t). I realize that life is busy, but taking ten minutes per night to review those words will give your child a lifetime of success!

Thank you to the many volunteers this week, your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you also to the Brinegars for the donation of an electric pencil sharpener, it sure makes the morning routine go much faster.

Have a restful, warm weekend,
Mrs. Jaynes

Memory for next week; the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23.

Spelling words for next week are; an, at, can, cat, had, man.
You should study the words nightly with your child. Have him/her write the words, orally say them to you, sing them….whatever works for your child. We will have our spelling test every Friday.

I sent home the first sight word list of the year. Please make flashcards of the words on the list and review them nightly as well. I would suggest concentrating on ten words at a time and when your child has mastered those ten words move onto the next set of ten. These words are meant to be recognized by sight, not sounded out phonetically. Each student will be tested on this list of words every two weeks. When your child has mastered the list have him/her work on spelling the words.

Reminders; No school on Monday September 7th.
Early release day (2pm) on Thursday the 10th

We will begin studying money next week in math. Each child needs to bring 25 pennies in a labeled baggy to school on Tuesday.

Have a great three day vacation,
Mrs. Jaynes
